Diary of Alexander G. Downing: Tuesday, June 23, 1863

Fighting is still going on. A force of thirty thousand under command of General Sherman was sent to rout Johnston. The Eleventh Iowa, with the exception of Company E, went on an expedition¹ in the direction of the Big Black river. Company E was left here for picket duty.
