Civil War Connections to the RMS Titanic
  • The Roebling Family: Brevet Colonel Washington August Roebling, who went on to build the Brooklyn Bridge was the uncle of Washington Augustus Roebling II who perished aboard the RMS Titanic.
  • The Gracie Family: Confederate Brigadier-General Archibald Gracie's son, Archibald Gracie IV, authored "The Truth About Chickamauga" and survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic but died a few months later.
  • The Boggs Family: Confederate General William Robertson Bogg's nephew, Major Archibald Butt, military assistant to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, perished aboard the RMS Titanic.  His body was never recovered.
